Duties and responsibilities: Neurosurgeons perform surgery on the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves to remove tumors, relieve chronic pain and treat wounds, vascular disorders and diseases such as Parkinson's and epilepsy.
Salary: median starting salary of $395,000 for neurological surgeons. After six years in practice, the average salary grew to $589,500. "Neurosurgery Market Watch" reports that neurosurgeons six to 15 years into their profession earned a median income of $914,796.
Education: Earn a Bachelor's Degree, Attend Medical School, Pass the Medical Licensing Exam, Complete an Internship and Neurosurgical Residency Program and Become State Licensed and Board Certified.
Need for this profession: Strong communication and leadership skills, organizational and problem-solving skills, empathy, compassion, patience, dexterity, physical stamina, knowledge of brain and spinal cord anatomy
